Spinal Stenosis
When narrowing around the spinal nerves affects comfort, movement, or walking.
Request My ConsultationUnderstanding spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of spaces within the spine. It may put pressure on nerve roots or the spinal cord. It commonly affects the lower back or neck, and some people have narrowing without symptoms.
Common symptoms
- Pain, tingling, or numbness in the legs or buttocks.
- Leg discomfort with standing or walking that eases when leaning forward.
- Neck-related symptoms may include arm or hand numbness or weakness.
What can cause it?
Age-related changes can reduce the space available for nerves. These include bone spurs, thickened ligaments, and bulging discs. Some people are born with a narrower spinal canal.
How it is evaluated
Evaluation combines your symptom history with an examination of strength, sensation, balance, and walking. MRI or CT may clarify the anatomy. Imaging findings alone do not determine whether treatment is needed.
