Request My ConsultationUnderstanding arthritis of the neck and spine
Spinal arthritis affects joints in the spine. Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, is one form; inflammatory arthritis is another. The word arthritis alone does not identify the cause or mean surgery is needed.
Common symptoms
- Neck or back pain with stiffness.
- Reduced comfort or flexibility when turning, bending, or standing.
- Nerve-related symptoms when associated changes narrow space around nerves.
What can cause it?
Degenerative arthritis involves changes in joint cartilage and nearby bone. Disc height loss can alter loading on spinal joints. Inflammatory conditions have a different underlying process and may need medical care beyond treatment of a painful spinal level.
How it is evaluated
Your clinician reviews the pattern of stiffness and pain, examines movement and nerve function, and considers imaging when appropriate. Questions about other joints and general health help determine whether an inflammatory condition should be investigated.
