Overview

Understanding sciatica

Sciatica describes a pattern of nerve pain rather than one specific diagnosis. The next step is identifying what is irritating or compressing a nerve root in the lower spine.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp, burning, or electric pain traveling down a leg.
  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness.
  • Symptoms that change with movement, coughing, or sneezing.

What can cause it?

A herniated disc can press on a nerve root. Bone spurs and spinal stenosis are other possible causes, particularly with age-related changes.

How it is evaluated

Your clinician asks where the pain travels and checks movement, strength, and nerve function. Imaging may help confirm the underlying cause when appropriate.

Treatment considerations

These are general educational options. A consultation helps determine what is appropriate for your diagnosis and health.

Movement and rehabilitation

Many cases improve without surgery. Your clinician may recommend modified activity and physical therapy.

Managing symptoms

Medication or an injection may be considered as part of an individualized plan.

When surgery is discussed

Persistent, disabling symptoms can lead to a surgical evaluation focused on the source of nerve pressure.
